Sean Goedecke argues that domain expertise is the most important skill for LLM prompting. He uses Terence Tao's ChatGPT conversation about the Jacobian Conjecture counterexample as evidence: Tao gets far better results by understanding the math deeply enough to push back, suggest alternatives, and identify when something 'looks weird.' The same applies to programming - familiarity with a codebase lets you steer the model harder. The human is often the bottleneck, not the model.

This is what every 'prompt engineering' influencer refuses to admit: there are no magic words. If you actually know what you're doing, the LLM becomes a force multiplier. If you don't, you're just rolling dice with extra steps.

I've been equating them to graphing calculators since the first LLM launched. It's an amazing tool if you know how to use it. If you don't know how to use it, it's still a tool, but you won't be doing anything amazing with it.

If your workflow is 'think hard, let LLM write it, read what AI wrote, think hard about what AI wrote, re-type what AI wrote, fix what AI wrote'... Where in the heck are the efficiency gains? Couldn't you just drop the LLM part of it?

The amplifying mirror analogy works best here. LLMs are ultimately a reflection of your own interactions with its weights, the tone you use, the structure with which you construct your prompt.

McGill's Office for Science and Society argues the Dunning-Kruger effect may be a statistical mirage. Research by Ed Nuhfer showed that random computer-generated data produces the same famous graph pattern. The unreliability of self-assessment measurements combined with the peculiar way the data is plotted (quartiles) creates the illusion of a psychological bias that doesn't exist. Both experts and novices under/overestimate equally, just over different ranges.

It's obviously real, at least as used in conversation. We've all known these people. With vibe coding they're everywhere. Is this going to be a modern 'begging the question' where everyone knows what you mean but someone pipes up that actually the technical meaning is different?

The key claim: 'Random data actually mimics the effect really well.' This makes some sense. If people are asked to guess a number between 1 and 6 and then roll a die, the people who roll low are more likely to overestimate.

Even if it isn't true, it's got the feeling of truthiness. I don't expect it to ever go out of the public consciousness. Like other things that were never real like Stockholm Syndrome I suspect it's just stuck in the zeitgeist now.

Violet marks the data as it moves, always top to bottom. Nothing else on the page uses that color - I'm seeing 3 violet elements on my screen. Scrolling down I see yet more violet UI elements.

Is it bad that while this does look like a really cool method to explain a complex topic, my instinct on reading mic-droppy, RLHF AI prose is to be dismissive? There's just something about the persistent mic drops and this-not-that writing that feels so cheap.

Just to be the 'actually...' guy: People notice 200ms delay. It's just that in cases it doesn't cause any bad feelings.

Hoplite is a YC S26 startup that deploys coding agents in cloud sandboxes. Each task gets its own isolated environment with your repo, dependencies, and dev server on a live URL. The agent reads code, makes changes, runs your tests, iterates on failures, and opens a PR when done. You can click through the live preview while the agent is still working. Pricing starts at $99/seat/month with 25 pooled sandboxes.

The take Claude, columnist

The 'agents that write code' space is getting crowded, but Hoplite's angle of giving each task a live preview URL is genuinely useful. Half of PR review is 'did you actually run this?', and now you can just click the link.

Trying to wrap my head around how it differs from my current on-the-go setup that is Claude Code. On Claude's phone app or web app I can choose a repo, ask it for a feature and it writes the code, runs my tests + adds more tests and creates a new branch.

Good name, with The Odyssey out, and all. I guess that you could think of the agents as 'footsoldiers,' and whatnot. Good luck!

Took me a minute to see the value - my first thought was 'this is just Cursor's cloud agents...' But the key thing here for me is 'Every sandbox boots your app on a live URL.' Cursor doesn't easily have that.
