OpenAI claims their AI contributed to 10 peer-reviewed math/CS papers for roughly $2000 in compute. Topics range from combinatorics to topology, with results accepted at venues like STOC and FOCS. The catch: authorship attribution for AI-generated proofs remains murky.

The $2000 figure is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. How many failed attempts preceded these 10 wins? Without the full experimental setup, this is the AI equivalent of publishing only your winning lottery tickets.

My main gripe here is the lack of transparency around the total experiment. I doubt they simply pointed their model at these ten specific problems and gave it one shot. The $2000 number could be completely misleading, similar to P-value hacking.

AI has no self-awareness. It's a tool. When you assemble furniture using a screwdriver, the torque force miraculously transfers to the screw through molecular forces. We don't credit the screwdriver.

Back in high school, simulating different elevator algorithms was one of the projects I implemented during my CS class. A cool connection is that a spinning-disk HDD is actually kind of like one really long elevator wrapped around a spindle.

I wonder if Destination Dispatch being worse is an artifact of how the author used random destinations. In my building, everyone goes to ground floor or arrives in groups to the same destination.

The Grammar of Graphics crowd is not impressed. ggplot literally wrote the book on expressing all possible qualitative graphics, and people are still asking 'why not just tell the AI to write Plotly directly?' Microsoft's answer to AI visualization is another abstraction layer nobody asked for.

Even in the AI Era, ggplot's API is still the best charting API. The name 'Grammar of Graphics' isn't just marketing - they literally sought to write a grammar capable of expressing all possible qualitative graphics. They even wrote a book about it.

So this is one interface that can render to multiple charting backends? If AI is writing the Flint code, why not just have it write the backend code instead? I'm not sure why I would want pluggable charting backends.

5Ten Ways NAS Is Getting Enshitified NAS

NAS vendors are making devices worse: soldered RAM eliminates upgrades, subscription features lock basic functionality behind paywalls, cloud dependencies break offline use, proprietary drives exclude third-party options, and AI features nobody asked for drain resources.

That's not a NAS anymore, that's a full server. I think of a NAS as 'low-power computer with lots of storage attached', so not being able to upgrade the RAM is concerning but not catastrophic for that use case.

I built my own NAS, just Ubuntu+ZFS using an old PC I had and it works great. Don't know why people are so crazy about buying prebuilt NASes.

While I don't disagree with the individual complaints, I've seen this niche go from running scuffed OSes on underpowered Synologies to multiple hot swap NASes running great x86 chips. Things suck for Synology dependents, but I'm seeing more options than ever.
