Security researcher discovered that Creative Sound Blaster Katana V2X speakers can be wirelessly attacked via Bluetooth from 15 meters away. No pairing required. Attackers can flash custom firmware to turn the speaker into a covert spy tool or BadUSB device that executes arbitrary commands on the host PC. Creative's response: 'not a vulnerability.' The firmware uses CTP protocol with a static key derivable from their app binaries.

Meta planned to track employee clicks and keystrokes to train AI models. After backlash, they've added a new control: workers can pause data collection for up to 30 minutes at a time. The company is using employee work activity to feed its AI training pipeline, and apparently a half-hour privacy break is the compromise we landed on.

It's always been hard to know the extent of how draconian tracking actually is. In the US, there's the expectation that when you use an employer-provided device any and all activity on it can be fully monitored and used against the employee.

DDR5 memory prices have skyrocketed to $375 minimum for 32GB kits, and 2x32GB sets that cost $200 a year ago now run $900. The culprit is AI: data centers are hoovering up all available memory capacity for training and inference workloads, leaving consumer PC builders fighting over scraps. Even enterprise customers are seeing quotes around €200k for 48 RDIMMs.

A declaration from mathematicians (including Terence Tao) about AI's role in mathematics. Key points: current AI produces plausible but unreliable proofs that are hard to distinguish from correct ones; the goal of mathematics is understanding, not just theorems; the community needs to discuss fundamental values before AI changes everything. Tao says these are questions they should have discussed years ago.

Most of the arguments here feel like gate keeping and resistance to change. I didn't see any arguments that were directly about advancing the state of knowledge of math.

Terence Tao: 'This has been the result of months of community input about fundamental values and goals of the mathematical community. In retrospect, these were questions we should have been discussing years ago.'
