Maggie Appleton dissects Steve Yegge's Gas Town, an experimental AI agent orchestration system where specialized agents (Mayor, Polecats, Witness, Refinery) manage coding tasks in hierarchies. It uses 'Beads' for memory management and costs $2k-5k/month to run. The architecture is deliberately vibe-coded and Yegge has never seen the source code.

When your AI agent system has a Mayor and Polecats, you've either built the future of software development or a very expensive city-builder sim. The $5k monthly bill suggests the latter.

I don't get the widespread hatred of Gas Town. If you read Steve's writeup, it's clear that this is a big fun experiment. It pushes and crosses boundaries, it is a mixture of technology and art, it is provocative.

Yegge is leaning into the true definition of vibecoding with this project: 'It is 100% vibecoded. I've never seen the code, and I never care to.' I don't get it. Even with a very good understanding of what type of work I am doing, Claude code etc. just plain fail or use sloppy code.

Finally, a synthesizer that sounds alive because it literally is vibrating metal. The fact that you can poke it and something happens puts it leagues ahead of most software synths.

Author argues we're exiting tech consolidation and entering a new era of hardware diversity. Gen-Z is buying vintage iPods and wired headphones, VR/AR is going mainstream, niche devices like Playdate are thriving, and antitrust pressure is fragmenting big tech. The monoculture of 'one device for everything' is giving way to specialized, single-purpose tech.

The thesis is correct but the examples are weak. Gen-Z buying iPods is nostalgia cosplay, not a market shift. Call me when someone ships a new dedicated MP3 player that isn't a collectors' item.

I think the author is correct to a point but the examples don't provide the best support. Gen Z buying iPods and people buying N64 games again is not evidence of the monoculture breaking apart - it's a retreat into the past for the enlightened few because their needs are not being met by modern goods.

I'm not sure I agree with all of that - that single-purpose tech is making a real comeback. But I do have one example: A Garmin watch. Unlike 'full' smartwatches, Garmin devices are intentionally limited but what they do works very well and seems fully debugged.

Nothing particularly notable here. A lot of it seems to be 'We have something in-house designed for our use cases, use that instead of the standard lib equivalent'. The rest looks very reasonable, like avoiding locale-hell.

Hier nichts besonders Bemerkenswertes.

I like it but wonder why it seems so slow compared to the chatgpt web interface. I still find myself more productive copying and pasting from chat much of the time. You get virtually instant feedback, and it feels far more natural when you're tossing around ideas.

Interesting that compaction is done using an encrypted message that 'preserves the model's latent understanding of the original conversation'. The Responses API has evolved to support a special /responses/compact endpoint.

The best part about this blog post is that none of it is a surprise – Codex CLI is open source. It's nice to be able to go through the internals without having to reverse engineer it. Their communication is exceptional, too. Eric Traut is all over the issues and PRs.
