In Yakutsk, where dry-docks are scarce and temperatures hit -50°C, workers repair ships by chainsaw-cutting layers of river ice beneath the hull. After each cut, they wait for the exposed water to freeze, then repeat until they can access the hull or propeller. It's ingenious and terrifying.

I saw a youtube video of a single mother whose job it was to cut out the ice from underneath the ships. Apparently its a very dangerous job because you can easily end up frozen to the river if you're not careful.
