Paper Instruments post-trained GLM-5.3 Flash with reinforcement learning for finance, law, consulting and operations work, and calls the result Ultramarine 1 Flash. It beats its base model by 4.1 points on average across six knowledge-work benchmarks, leads on JobBench (62.9) and their internal suite (59.3), but loses to Gemini 3.8 Flash and Claude Fable 5 on DiligenceBench and APEX-Agents. The pitch is price: $0.13 per task against $8.19 for Fable 5 and $2.09 for GPT-5.6 Sol. The reward design is the real contribution, rubric-based grading for work products like memos that no test suite can check. Weights are 'coming soon'; what shipped today is the Feather harness and their Office file libraries.

The 60x cheaper number does the work here, not the benchmark wins. Two of the six benchmarks have Ultramarine in third place, and the results section omits Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra entirely until the cost chart, where they suddenly reappear. A 4.1-point lift over GLM-5.3 Flash for cents per task is a genuinely useful result. Say that instead.

In the Results section, they compare Ultramarine only to models it beats on every metric, ignoring Fable 5.1, GPT-6 Astra, Claude Opus 5.5. Then in the cost-per-task graph, suddenly all of those appear. Own your strengths and weaknesses.

It applies large-scale RL to a strong open base model, GLM-5.3 Flash. In case anyone was curious what it's based on. No judgement either way, depends how well they did the post-training.

What kind of harness does one use for these? They say it can create office documents, but how? What do you plug this into to say 'give me a slide deck with last quarter's sales figures'?
Welchen Harness nutzt man dafür?

Alex Wang builds the transformer architecture up from one problem: how do you store key-value pairs in a matrix and read them back without interference from similar keys? Start with naive outer-product accumulation, capacity about d_k. Solve a regression instead of accumulating and you whiten the keys, roughly doubling it. Push the similarities through ReLU and interference from dissimilar keys gets suppressed; raise ReLU to the power p and capacity grows to about d_k^p. The exponential function is every power at once via its Taylor series, which gets you roughly e^(2⁎sqrt(d_k)) memories, about 1.2 million at d_k=64. That is softmax attention, with the normalization there for numerical stability. The MLP and the linear layers fall out of the same chain.

The value here is not that attention is secretly a Hopfield network, which people have said for years. It is that each architectural choice gets a reason: this component exists to suppress that specific failure mode. Most transformer explainers show you the diagram and tell you the shapes line up. This one tells you what breaks without each piece.
Diese sagt, was ohne jedes Teil kaputtgeht.

Great article. My favorite fact about transformers as a Hopfield network is that transformers are so good at memorizing that they only need one step to find a suitable memory, as opposed to multiple steps for a vanilla Hopfield network.

Apple ran Muse Spark Open, 816B total parameters with 42B active, on Mac Studios with M5 Ultra and up to 512GB of unified memory. A single M5 Ultra hits time-to-first-token 4.6x faster than M3 Ultra. Four machines linked by dual Thunderbolt 5 cables with RDMA, using tensor parallelism through MLX's jaccl communication layer, generate over 36 tokens per second; pipeline parallelism is also implemented. Peak draw is 300W per machine. The model ran at NVFP4 4-bit, while Mistral Medium 3.5 ran native FP8 and Qwen 3.8 native BF16.

The engineering is real: RDMA over Thunderbolt and tensor parallelism across four boxes is not a trivial thing to ship. The benchmark table is where it gets convenient. Running the Meta model at 4-bit and Qwen at BF16 is not a comparison anyone would set up by accident, and 36 tokens per second needs four Mac Studios that cost more than a car.

So Meta will spend millions or billions building open-weight models, and then people will send Apple $20,000 to run them. Seems like a good deal for Apple.

They're sandbagging Qwen pretty heavily by benchmarking Meta's model at 4-bit against Qwen at native BF16, and nothing else shown. That's not a quant most users would choose. I get that this is cross-brand marketing for Apple's partner, but Muse Spark isn't in the top ten models I'd consider if I had a 512GB M5.

A single M5 Ultra with 256GiB runs DeepSeek 4.1 Flash just fine, around 3200 tok/s prefill and 45 tok/s. M5 Max with 128GiB runs GLM 5.3 Flash fine too. I benchmarked both on quality benchmarks to make sure you get the official numbers.

C++26 adds a freestanding <debugging> header with three noexcept functions. std::breakpoint() halts execution, usually compiling to a single int3 on x86; with no debugger attached the behavior is implementation-defined and typically kills the process. std::is_debugger_present() checks on every call rather than caching, since debuggers attach and detach mid-run, and it reads IsDebuggerPresent() on Windows or /proc/self/status on Linux. std::breakpoint_if_debugging() composes the two. The design detail that matters is that is_debugger_present() is replaceable, so freestanding targets with no OS-level detection can supply their own. None of the three are constexpr.
std::is_debugger_present() 每次调用都重新检查而不缓存,因为调试器可能在运行中附加或分离;它在 Windows 上调用 IsDebuggerPresent(),在 Linux 上读 /proc/self/status。std::breakpoint_if_debugging() 则是两者的组合。
std::is_debugger_present()はキャッシュせず毎回チェックする。 Windows では IsDebuggerPresent()を、Linux では/proc/self/status を読む。std::breakpoint_if_debugging()はこの 2 つを合成したもの。
윈도우에서는 IsDebuggerPresent()를, 리눅스에서는 /proc/self/status 를 읽는다. std::breakpoint_if_debugging()은 둘을 합친 것이다.

Three functions people have been hand-rolling with #ifdef blocks for thirty years, now with one spelling. The replaceable is_debugger_present() is the part that earns the paper: embedded targets were the reason this could not just be a macro. The comment thread is more fun than the proposal, since one reader ran the post through an AI detector and posted the result.
이 제안을 정당화하는 부분은 교체 가능한 is_debugger_present()다.

Sadly the paper gets a detail wrong. The expectation that breakpoint() produces a single INT3 to place the debugger as close as possible in the caller is the wrong design.

Pangram says the last two thirds are AI generated. I suspected it when I got to 'The separation of concerns is deliberate.' It might be a false positive, or just a few spots. I'm sorry if the author actually writes like that.

Johns Hopkins engineers built pairs of magnetic robots roughly the size of a grain of rice to treat endocarditis, a heart tissue infection that affects about 50,000 Americans a year, without open-heart surgery. One robot is a needle module that docks onto infected tissue and stays there; the second carries antibiotics to that dock and releases them slowly at the site. An external electromagnetic coil system, similar to MRI hardware, steers both, so neither needs a battery or a motor. The team tested on phantom hearts and on porcine heart tissue, navigating against simulated blood flow, and published in Advanced Materials Technologies. Next step is phantom hearts that actually contract.

The design choice worth noting is that putting all the power outside the body removes the battery, which is what usually stops millirobots at the demo stage. What it has not faced yet is a heart that moves: testing is on static phantoms and excised pig tissue, and the researchers say contracting phantoms come next. That gap is the whole problem, and they are at least honest about where they are.

Both robots are magnetic and guided wirelessly by an external electromagnetic coil system. That's so cool. It reminds me of being a kid and playing with magnets beneath a sheet of cardboard, using them to invisibly move metal objects on the surface. Is that sort of the principle here?
