You say numbers from 1 to 9 out loud, as randomly as you can. Before each one the page seals a prediction in a virtual envelope; the first ten are a warm-up that does not count. Under the hood it runs ten small predictors at once and trusts whichever has been right lately: which number follows which, runs going up or down, repeats and clusters, and which numbers you have been neglecting. The author says the neglect predictor does most of the work. At the end it scores you against 206 people from a psychology study.

The neglect predictor is the whole finding. People treat randomness as a quota to fill, so they top up whichever digit has not come around in a while, and that single habit is enough to beat them. It also explains the split in the thread: commenters who typed their numbers scored 11 to 12%, barely above the 11% you would get by chance, because a keyboard lets you stall and check yourself in a way that speaking out loud does not.

A nice spin on the Aaronson oracle. In a Berkeley class he wrote a program that let people type f or d and predicted the next key correctly about 70% of the time. Most people don't know how to type randomly.

The house called 3 of my 27 scored numbers, 11%, and blind guessing averages 3.0 of them. Tried again: 14 of 118, 12%. Maybe it's because I'm typing, which is easier to do than speaking up.

A budgeting app for Apple Silicon Macs, in beta, that answers questions about your spending with models running on-device. You import a CSV from any bank; a small local model turns your question into a structured query of what to count, about what and over which dates, and hand-written code does the arithmetic against your ledger. A second local reader, a 2.5 GB download, interprets the question independently, and the app only shows an answer when both agree, otherwise it says it is not sure. The write-up reports wrong answers going from roughly 1 in 5 to 5 out of 494, and lists the costs: 12 to 14 seconds per answer instead of 0.1, and tests run on nine invented households rather than real finances.

The most useful number in the write-up is one of the failures: a small model fine-tuned on questions the developers wrote themselves hit 97% in-house and dropped to 25% on households written by people who had never seen the code. Anyone shipping a tuned small model should read that twice. Three-model majority voting also failed, at 20 to 22% error, which is why the design ended at two readers plus a refusal. The product risk is elsewhere: as the top commenter says, CSV export flows differ at every bank, and that is where most users will quit before any of this accuracy matters.

Nice project, but 'import a CSV from any bank' is where you'll lose people. Pulling data from multiple sources, each with its own export flow, is a non-starter for building good financial habits.

The title promises tracking of how views change over time; the site delivers a searchable, timestamped quote archive for 11 people, which is useful but is not the same thing. The sharpest objection in the thread is the right one: a selective archive of public statements is a tool for writing whatever narrative you want, so the only version that works is one comprehensive enough that a missing quote would be surprising. And a commenter building something similar names the bug that matters here, YouTube's auto-captions cannot tell apart speakers in a multi-person podcast, which is a problem when the entire product is attributing a sentence to a named executive.

This would be a good thing to have, but it has to be comprehensive. Selective omission and reduction of context would let you write any narrative you chose. You need enough scope that finding an uncovered public statement would be surprising.

AnitaB.org cancelled the Grace Hopper Celebration, which was due to run in Anaheim, because it could not cover the event's operating costs. The press release says both individual registrations and sponsorship commitments came in significantly below expectations. Registrants will hear about their fees by October 26, with the organisation noting each person's circumstances may differ and that details depend on getting a clearer picture of AnitaB.org's finances; attendees are told to cancel their own travel and hotel bookings. President and CEO Brenda Darden Wilkerson says the cancellation has adversely affected the organisation's finances and that leadership is evaluating strategic alternatives and what programming it can offer in future.

Read the release closely and this is not a conference having a bad year. An organisation that cannot say what refunds look like until it understands its own financial condition, and that is simultaneously evaluating strategic alternatives, is describing a solvency problem with a conference attached. Sponsors pulling back from anything that resembles DEI is the obvious cause the release will not name, but the cost landed on students: GHC's draw was always the recruiting floor, and the ones who booked flights are now out of pocket while the refund question stays open.

Sad to see this cancelled, especially at the last minute. Since DEI imploded most companies won't touch anything that looks like it, and that clearly didn't help with funding and sponsors. The controversies around DEI were never about this event.
Da pena verlo cancelado, y encima a última hora.

In 1692 someone known only as A. Boogert hand-wrote a 900-page manual on watercolour, with more than 700 pages of painted swatches, explaining how to mix the paints and how to shift each tone by adding one, two or three portions of water. Only one copy was ever made. Medieval historian Erik Kwakkel found it in a French database; it sits in the Bibliothèque Méjanes in Aix-en-Provence, which has published full-page zoomable scans. There is no evidence any painter used it, in part because most of the Dutch masters were dead by the time it was finished, 271 years before Pantone launched in 1963.

The detail worth keeping is that the book was already digitised and sitting in a public database for years before anyone recognised what it was. Scanning is the cheap half of preservation and cataloguing is the expensive half, which is why a hand-painted 900-page colour system can be online and still effectively lost. As for Boogert, one copy and no known readers makes this a reference work with a readership of one, which is also the most relatable thing about it.

The article mentions Werner's Nomenclature of Colour, which is a marvel. Thames and Hudson's Nature's Palette includes it and expands on how the nomenclature was produced, with illustrations of the plants and animals Werner used.

Always fun to read these old books with the long s and having to remind myself not to misread it as an f. It gets silly, like the authors have a lisp.
