Titan, an internal Microsoft analytics service, did not verify JWT signatures. The researcher, Faav, built an unsigned token with "alg":"none" and set the upn claim to "admin", which granted administrator SQL access across 17 connected analytics databases: about 17.3 trillion rows, 9,863 distinct table names, roughly 25,000 employee and account records with emails and login history, and Bing search activity with country and state level location. Faav ran two one-row queries to confirm access, extracted no customer PII, and received $5,000. Microsoft reviewed the writeup before publication and had sections and figures removed.

The bug is alg:none, in 2026, at Microsoft, on a service wired to 17 databases. The $5,000 against a published program ceiling of $250,000, plus a pre-publication edit pass that cut figures, is how a company prices a report it would rather nobody read closely.

Microsoft had editorial control over this post, cutting sections and figures and reshaping how the impact is described before publication. That is not great. Pressuring a kid into handing over full editorial control of a disclosure is gross.

2Why the Bronze Age Collapsed

Works in Progress argues the real puzzle is not why Bronze Age empires fell but why nothing reconsolidated for centuries. Bronze needed tin from Afghanistan, Cornwall and France, so only states that could run long supply chains could arm an army. Once bloomery furnaces made iron workable around 1200 BC, the fourth most abundant element in the crust could be smelted locally, and peripheral communities could produce weapons comparable to elite ones. Supporting evidence cited: skeletal trauma rising after iron adoption, average reign lengths dropping 29%, and ancient writers linking iron directly to wider warfare. Drought, famine and the Sea Peoples are treated as shocks that explain the fall but not the long silence.

Splitting the collapse from the failure to recover is the useful move here, because the Sea Peoples story never explained the centuries of silence. The weak point is the one randomImmigrant names in the thread: the Harappans had tin nearby and bronze in ordinary houses with little visible hierarchy, which the supply-chain-equals-centralization argument has to account for.

Eric Cline makes a good case that Bronze Age empires were organized around a palace economy, where only royals and their pals were allowed to trade. In some places the sovereign literally owned all the land and the people on it. A series of bad seasons, disasters and invasions would open a window for revolt.
Eric Cline
Eric Cline
Eric Cline

Doesn't the Harappan civilization make a mess of all this? Tin was nearby, there's evidence of bronze artifacts in houses across the cities, and far less evidence of hierarchical power than in other Bronze Age civilizations.

Magnitude compiles and tunes its kernels on your actual device before a model runs, instead of shipping precompiled kernels for broad hardware classes the way llama.cpp does. Claimed numbers against llama.cpp: 92% faster decode and 9% faster prefill on Metal, 19% faster decode and 23% faster prefill on CUDA. Apache 2.0, runs on Apple Silicon, NVIDIA, AMD or plain CPU, exposes an OpenAI-compatible API, and hand-writes optimized kernels for the popular open-weight families rather than supporting everything. The pitch is local agent workloads: long sessions, several running at once, while you still use the machine.

Two of the top three commenters land the same hit, and it is the right one: on Apple Silicon the baseline people actually run is MLX, not llama.cpp. Until there's an mlx_lm number, 92% faster decode on Metal is a measurement against the opponent that makes the chart look best. sebastienburel's second point matters more anyway: for agents the cost is resending the system prompt and tool schemas every turn, which no kernel tuning touches.

On a Mac the baseline I'd want is MLX, not llama.cpp. llama.cpp isn't the fast path on Apple Silicon for most models people run locally, so a speedup over llama.cpp could still be slower than mlx_lm. Second, more important for agents: decode speed is rarely what hurts. It's resending the same system prompt plus tool schemas every turn.

This seems to be a good idea. However, beating llama.cpp on speed is a low bar. I found it to be a good baseline, but at least on Mac there was always something way faster, like ds4, omlx, mtplx.

On my local inference box I have a perpetual codex thread open in my llama.cpp checkout that I periodically ask to look at pending llama.cpp PRs, research the latest MTP and attention optimizations, check model quants and finetunes, and sweep the frontier.

Dwayne Day traces a 40-year US program of suitcase-sized ELINT satellites launched as hitchhikers off larger spacecraft, mostly the HEXAGON photo-reconnaissance birds. They spun rapidly, sweeping antennas across the ground to record radar and other signals, usually storing them for later downlink. URSALA did general search at 2 to 12 GHz, four launched in the 1970s. RAQUEL did directed search and technical intelligence at 4 to 18 GHz, two variants in 1974 and 1978. FARRAH combined both at 2 to 18 GHz, with small versions in 1982 to 1984 and larger shuttle-intended models that flew on Titan rockets from 1988 to 1992. Most of this, including previously secret shuttle payloads, was declassified only in the past year. The program pioneered TENCAP, pushing intercepts to field commanders through mobile ground stations rather than only to Washington.

The detail worth keeping is the one Almondsetat raises: in 2012 the NRO handed NASA two decommissioned satellites that turned out to be Hubble-class telescopes pointed down. The US had those to spare while NASA fought for budget. These programs were never constrained by what was technically possible, only by who was asking.

The incredible technologies the US deployed decades before the competition reminds me of how the NRO gifted NASA a couple of their decommissioned satellites in 2012 and they turned out to be basically upgraded Hubble telescopes pointed at earth. From the 90s to the 2000s the US had multiple Hubble-level telescopes just for spying while NASA was fighting for one.

A while ago NRO put online a bunch of declassified documents, including their internal books on the history of satellite reconnaissance. But it was all in one unsorted pile, often scans of barely legible pages. I think this was the original source of some of the documents in this article.

The author's great-great-grandfather was a farrier in rural France, shoeing horses and repairing carts. When cars arrived he became a mechanic, and his descendants stayed in that trade for generations. The constant was the purpose, helping people get around, while the means moved from horses to engines. The argument for developers facing AI: what most of them actually value is making things, solving problems and seeing people use the result, not writing code as such. The closing line is to let go of the how in order to keep the why.

The farrier analogy works because the car still needed a person with hands, tools and a shop in the same village. That is the part the thread keeps circling: 459 comments, and bhelkey's horse quote is the strongest objection in it. The author's own follow-up concedes the point, that this is a personal story rather than advice, which is the honest framing the title does not give.

There is a quote from a CGP Grey video from a bit over a decade ago: there isn't a rule of economics that says better technology makes more, better jobs for horses. It sounds shockingly dumb to say out loud, but swap horses for humans and suddenly people think it sounds about right.

Lots of doom in here. If software engineering goes the way of the dodo, I suspect most other white collar jobs are also displaced. A few years after that I suspect an overwhelming supply of physical labor. It's a house of cards at that point.
Hier herrscht viel Untergangsstimmung.
