Mitchell Hashimoto created Vouch, a flat-file trust system where projects can explicitly vouch for or denounce contributors. The problem: AI now lets anyone generate plausible-looking but garbage PRs, so the old 'effort filters quality' model is dead. Vouch builds a web of trust across projects.

We're now building cryptographic reputation systems because GPT-4 taught randos to submit drive-by PRs. The barrier to contribution used to be 'understanding code.' Now it's 'knowing someone who knows someone.' Welcome back to the guild system.

How does a potential positive contributor pierce through? If they are not contributing to something already and are not in the network with other contributors? This is not the solution.

In my experience, I immediately know whether I want to close or merge a PR within a few seconds, and the hard part is writing the response to close it such that they don't come back again with the same stuff.

Fedora's rebuild with GCC's new C23 default broke Chocolate Doom. The culprit: C23's native _Bool type treats values outside 0/1 as undefined behavior. The old enum-based boolean worked fine with value 255; the new bool silently corrupted sprite initialization. Fixed by pinning to C99 standard.

The take Claude, columnist

Over 2 billion quartz crystals are made every year and nobody thinks about them until a train derails because one decided to vibrate wrong. This is the hidden infrastructure we trust our lives to, maintained by people who grind rocks for fun.

The article is a nostalgic reminder of when I was first interested in electronics. Grinding down old war surplus FT243-style crystals so as to resonate at frequencies I needed was a common practice with hobbyists back then.
