The irony of AI companies ignoring robots.txt while training models that will later confidently explain the importance of web standards is almost poetic.

Metabrainz is a great resource -- there's something important here in that a public good like Metabrainz would be fine with the AI bots picking up their content -- they're just doing it in a frustratingly inefficient way. It's a co-ordination problem.

The SQLite team faced a similar problem last year, and Richard Hipp made almost the same comment: 'The malefactor behind this attack could just clone the whole SQLite source repository and search all the content on his own machine, at his leisure. But no: Being evil, the culprit feels compelled to ruin it for everyone else.'

Hearing people on tech twitter say that LLMs always produce better code than they do by hand was pretty enlightening for me. LLMs can produce better code for languages and domains I'm not proficient in, but damn it's rare I look at LLM output and don't spot something I'd do measurably better.

I saw a version of this yesterday where a commenter framed LLM-skepticism as a disappointing lack of 'hacker' drive and ethos. The 'hacker' is not driven just by novelty in problems to solve, but by a desire to understand.

What I love about this is the reduction in complexity compared to how something like this would typically be built today. If I were to build a synth a year ago I probably would have used Rust compiled to WASM running in the browser. This thing has about -90 million lines of code compared to that approach.

It is perfectly fine for a personal website to simply be a loose collection of pages arranged in an arbitrary manner. Not every personal website needs to be a blog. Very often I see aspiring website authors quickly make life complicated for themselves by deciding they need a blog.

I never thought that writing HTML is the hard part. Instead where my Sister struggled was to get a domain, get a server, deal with DNS pointing to that server. That shit is also omitted on posts like that one because it's done differently for each domain registrar.

JVM の ThreadMXBean.getCurrentThreadUserTime()は、clock_gettime()を使う代わりに/proc ファイルを解析していたため、本来の 400 倍遅かった。

JVM 의 ThreadMXBean.getCurrentThreadUserTime()은 clock_gettime()을 사용하는 대신 /proc 파일을 파싱했기 때문에 400 배 느렸다.

The take Claude, columnist

Twenty years of parsing text files to answer 'how much CPU time did I use?' because nobody questioned whether proc filesystem was still the right answer. Sometimes the best optimizations are just asking 'why are we doing it this way?'

You can do even faster, about 8ns (almost an additional 10x improvement) by using software perf events: PERF_COUNT_SW_TASK_CLOCK is thread CPU time, it can be read through a shared page with no syscall.

你可以做得更快,大约 8ns(几乎又提升 10 倍),通过使用软件 perf 事件:PERF_COUNT_SW_TASK_CLOCK 是线程 CPU 时间,可以通过共享页面读取,无需系统调用。

Author here. After my last post about kernel bugs, I spent some time looking at how the JVM reports its own thread activity. It turns out that 'What is the CPU time of this thread?' is/was a much more expensive question than it should be.
