In 1975, a Cardiff couple invited Ronnie Lockwood, a homeless autistic man in his late 20s, into their home for Christmas dinner. He never left. For 45 years, Ronnie became part of their family, helped raise their kids, volunteered at their church, and developed beloved rituals like emptying the dishwasher daily. When he died in 2020 at 75, he left £40,000 to charity - exactly the amount needed to repair a community center now named Lockwood House in his honor.

The comments are full of people sharing similar stories about their parents welcoming strangers. Maybe the real Christmas miracle is that these people existed before social media could turn every good deed into content.

During his whole college professor career since the 70s, my father always took care that none of his students spent any major holidays alone and away from home, so we always ended up having 2 or 3 of them around for Christmas.

Crazy to see this story on the front page of the BBC and now Hacker News too! Ronnie was an awesome guy, and absolutely a part of Rob and Dianne's family, not a 'maid' as another comment suggested.

When you read this story - your heart warms & your eyes gets filled. It is crazy nice feeling. Yet, it hurts - to know there are so many homeless that our system needs corrections.

2Python 3.15's interpreter for Windows x86-64 should hopefully be 15% faster ¶
326 points108 commentsHN 46384167by lumpa
Python's tail-calling interpreter is finally coming to Windows and macOS with real speedups. The author previously apologized for inflated benchmark claims caused by a compiler bug, but this time it's legit: 5% faster on macOS AArch64 (XCode Clang) and 15% faster on Windows x86-64 (MSVC 18). The speedup comes from breaking up Python's 12,000-line interpreter function into smaller tail-called segments that compilers can actually optimize.

The money shot: #define Py_MUSTTAIL [[msvc::musttail]] for MSVC, and __attribute__((musttail)) for Clang. The key is telling compilers to treat tail calls as mandatory, not optional.

Hope it's not like that time with Python 3.14, when results were inflated due to a bug in LLVM 19 that prevented proper tail duplication optimization. Actual gains were approximately 0%.

3Maybe the default settings are too high ¶
241 points73 commentsHN 46387657by htk
The author argues we consume everything too fast - reading, eating, walking, living. Our default speed undermines the very pleasure we're seeking. By slowing down to what seems absurdly slow, we let our mental 'receptors for meaning' catch up. The metaphor: our minds are juggling like Lucy and Ethel at the chocolate factory conveyor belt. Slow the belt down and suddenly you can actually taste the chocolate.

My dad was a busy construction contractor. One summer he took the family to a week-long boat camp. It turned out our campsite was in the lake by a few inches at high water, so he grabs a shovel and starts digging trenches and ordering us around.

I had a technical manager who never felt pressure to be the first to answer. He could go completely silent, just staring straight ahead with fingers to his lips. He was processing, not panicking.

Walking the Camino de Santiago crystallized this for me. When you walk, you see everything. The world is huge. Everything is slower, higher fidelity. You can spend an entire day walking from one town to another.

With every passing year the New Yorker stands out even more. High quality long-form journalism and short fiction with minimal advertising is very hard to find. I'd highly encourage anyone who loves great writing to subscribe.

I've long thought about trying to map how the locations of music and theater events listed in the magazine have changed over time. There are performances in pretty much every corner of NYC but it's interesting to see which neighborhoods have been deemed relevant in different eras.

I hope this gets incorporated into the existing website. I always thought there was very fertile 'other articles you might like' ground that the New Yorker never took advantage of, given its reputation and legacy.

The AI framework that was supposed to abstract away complexity instead abstracted away security. Who could have predicted that trusting LLM outputs during deserialization was a bad idea?

The best part about this is that you know the type of people/companies using LangChain are likely the type that are not going to patch this in a timely manner.
