Midjourney is optimized for beautiful images, while Nano Banana is optimized for better prompt adherence and image editing. If your goal is to replace human designers with cheaper options, Nano Banana is indefinitely more useful.

I often need to login to colleagues' machines at work, but I find that their settings are not what I am familiar with. So I wrote an SSH wrapper which tars dotfiles into a base64 string, passes it to SSH, and decodes/setups on the remote temp directory.

I don't know, I just use the standard on my machine or on remote. Why bother to customize it all the time when you can't work without the customizations.

So many Web designers put zero thought into how their page looks when it is not loaded or not scrolled exactly past the trigger. On this page, it opens up with a '100%' loading indicator, for a site that appears to have no interactivity that would require JS.

I like how it looks. I don't like to see how badly it is crafted tech-wise - not optimized images, JS for things that work natively in the browser, bloat of Tailwind. Knowing Ruby, the relaxed approach doesn't correspond with sophistication in the language itself.

By sequencing 182 skin cells from 32,000+ dermatology patients, they discovered that tanning bed users' skin is 'riddled with the seeds of cancer' - cells with melanoma-causing mutations, especially on lower back areas exposed to UV beds but not natural sunlight.

Excessive UV exposure in general is not a great time, tanning is just a way of speedrunning damage. I'll never understand some people's fetishization with getting darker via tanning though. There's nothing wrong with light skin.

The UVB portion of sunlight indirectly increases dopamine levels. You find it mainly near noon-day sunlight, and tanning beds. So the feel-good effects may encourage users to come back for more.

I suppose the specifics are novel enough to warrant a paper, but on a layman's level it has been known for decades that UV ages your skin rapidly.

This was a great read but I took issue with this a bit: when they gave people willow bark extract corresponding to 240mg of salicin, the blood levels were equivalent to only 87mg of aspirin. 240mg of salicin is the recommended daily dose, so the therapeutic claims are questionable.

I certainly bought the ancient remedy story. Getting wised up doesn't diminish the amazing work done with willow and chinchona bark. On the whole, I'm going to give blowing willow smoke up my anus a miss.
