Author bought a $15 Xeon E7-8890 v4 for his Dell workstation because Intel said both CPUs use FCLGA2011 socket. Turns out LGA2011 has secret variants (Socket R vs Socket R2) with different physical keying. CPU became a paperweight.

I work in CPU security and it's the same with microarchitecture. The technical experts will say something like 'it affects Blizzard Creek and Windy Bluff models' - Intel's docs will say 'if CPUID leaf 0x3aa asserts bit 63 then the CPU is affected'.

I eventually concluded that the cross generation compatibility of Zen CPUs meant they had a better resale value. Whereas if you experienced the more common mobo failure with an Intel chip you were looking at replacing both.

There is some extremely strong evidence showing that the id founders used Softdisk's code in their own game. Sure, it's not the code responsible for the smooth scrolling, but it is code they probably shouldn't have used.

Cool work on a font, but this page is proof that google is turning the web into some kind of JSON for their app, Chrome. Extremely sluggish on non-Chrome. Starts with a black blank empty page. Fans spinning.
