Artificial Analysis benchmarked Inception Labs' Mercury 2.5, released this month. Output runs at about 780 tokens per second, with 2.91 seconds to the first token, a 260k context window, and pricing of $0.25 per million input tokens and $0.75 per million output. Its intelligence index score is 12, which is the median for the models it is grouped with, and it produced 35M tokens across the evaluation set against a 85M median, so it answers short.

Speed is only worth paying for once the output is good enough to use unread, and a score at the median with terse answers points at extraction, classification and cheap agent loops rather than anything you would hand a hard problem. The thread proved the weakness of speed as a selling point within minutes by naming a faster option running a different model, which is what happens when your headline number is the one competitors can also buy.

$17.2 million over up to five years is a modest budget for the place where most of physics, math and computer science appears first. The money buys runway; it does not solve the problem arXiv's own editor in chief has been describing publicly, which is a submission volume of machine-written papers that no screening process currently scales to. Independence from Cornell makes arXiv responsible for that problem with no university to absorb the overhead.
Tailscale describes four changes: on Linux and Android it now locates each packet inside one large GRO read instead of copying every ~1 KiB packet into a 64 KiB buffer, worth about 5% in many configurations; subnet routers, app connectors and exit nodes move from a single pipeline to multiple queues so work spreads across cores; writev hands the kernel several packet buffers in one call; and cached netmaps let a device reconnect one to two orders of magnitude faster when the control plane is hard to reach. The post gives no before and after throughput table.

Removing a copy per packet and parallelising the datapath are the right fixes, and the netmap cache is the one users will feel daily. But the loudest reply in the thread is that clients cap out near 1 Gbps on Windows and macOS, and a performance post containing one percentage and no benchmark numbers does not answer that. Cofounder apenwarr showing up to explain why kernel WireGuard is not automatically faster is the most substantive thing on the page.

I see a few comments saying kernel wireguard would make it faster; it's not really that simple. For a while our optimizations made wireguard-go faster than kernel wireguard because it was better optimized. They adopted some of those improvements and now we're on to the next order of magnitude together.

In my opinion this is Tailscale's largest issue. It cannot achieve greater than 1Gbps on client systems like Windows and Mac, and on Linux it struggles to reach 10Gbps even with a synthetic large packet benchmark.

The joke is the packaging; the work is the fabrication. Ducting air to a passive heatsink through a cardboard shell and landing within 3 mm on thickness is the kind of constraint that produces actual engineering, and the same gag today would be a Raspberry Pi rattling around in a padded envelope. One commenter is also right that the site still looks like 2003, which is the reason the build log is still readable at all.

Very impressive to pull off such a compact build in 2003. I built a Shuttle XPC cube in 2008 and thought that was tiny. I specifically used a laptop hard drive to reduce noise.

Very cool for nostalgic people like me. Slightly off topic, but I loved that the website still looks like an antique site from that era. I feel there is a correlation between vintage design and good content.

This was my favorite build from that site: the PSU-PC.

The Egyptian god Set is drawn with an animal head nobody can identify: square upright ears, a stiff forked tail, a long downward-curving snout. Proposals include a saluki-type hunting dog with cropped ears, other canines, a pig, camel, giraffe, aardvark, or a donkey in later Late Period images, and also that the creature was always imaginary. No mummified Set animal has ever been found, the depictions drift across thousands of years, and later hostility to Set led to his images being defaced, removing detail that might have settled it.

The interesting part is not that Egyptologists disagree about the ears, it is why the question is unanswerable. The identification would hinge on exactly the details that centuries of deliberate defacement removed, and there is no specimen to check against. That is a general shape of problem in archaeology: the evidence was destroyed by people who understood what it meant, which is a stronger form of loss than time and sand.

Huh, pretty clearly a dog or jackal though, right? Set was the god of Libya and at war with the good guy gods in Egypt, so the civilization based in Libya is where we could correlate the answer, and the Sahara has grown since the early days of Egypt, so the definitive answer may remain buried.

As the old Jaffa joke says: a serpent guard, a Horus guard and a Setesh guard meet on a neutral planet. The serpent guard's eyes glow. The Horus guard's beak glistens. The Setesh guard's nose drips.
