Gamers Nexus put LG OLEDs behind Wireshark and found the sets scanning the local network for phones and watches, logging nearby Wi-Fi names and signal strengths, running automated content recognition on every input, and capturing microphone audio while in standby. Cut the ethernet and the TV stored the voice files locally, then uploaded them once the network came back. LG's ad division claims 363 million secondary addressable devices in the US on top of roughly 216 million TVs sold. webOS remote code execution bugs are in responsible disclosure. LG has not commented.

The buffering is the part with no innocent explanation. A TV that records with the screen off and holds the audio until it can reach a server was built expecting to be offline sometimes. LG's own appliance terms already make it your job to warn guests they may be recorded, which says they understood exactly what they shipped.

Broadcom quietly turned the public download links for VMware's Virtual Disk Development Kit into 404s, with no deprecation notice, and told support customers the VDDK is no longer available for use or download and to go through authorized Technology Alliance Partners. VDDK is the library agentless migration and backup tools use to read virtual disks, so Azure Migrate, Red Hat's Migration Toolkit for Virtualization, Nutanix Move, virt-v2v, nbdkit and Platform9's vJailbreak are all affected. Proxmox ships its own importer and is not.

Removing the exit ramp is a strange escalation when the existing complaint against Broadcom was already about price. Anyone mid-migration now pays a partner or falls back to slower agent-based copying, and anyone who had not started just learned to plan the exit before the next renewal instead of after it. The line in the article about Proxmox being unaffected is going to sell a lot of Proxmox.

As an old ex-VMware engineer it is sad reading these. A lot of really cool engineering happened in VMware's heyday, and Broadcom seems to see the company as long past its ability to innovate.

The paper backdoors NixOS without touching a compiler. The researchers tampered with GNU strip in the binary seed; the payload rewrites ELF files, copies itself into the next generation of strip, and survives after the seed drops out of the dependency closure. From that one binary they built a complete graphical installer with no build failures, and nearly every binary it ships carries a backdoor. They tested against a real nixpkgs revision.

Because demolitions are invisible, this is a map of what survived rather than what was built, and neighborhoods that were replaced piece by piece read as empty until whichever decade the current buildings went up. This is the construction date of buildings that survived. Palms was replaced building by building so it appears dark when it was not, and the 1890s downtown is entirely gone.
