I love the pin level emulation model. The self-contained modular behaviour of components has real flexibility. Thin but explicitly defined interfaces are an under-explored domain for interoperability.

Pacing is the biggest problem with self-learning. Go forward too early and you'll struggle. Wait too long and you waste time. The textbooks don't tell you how much mastery you need before proceeding.
