I was in engineering school back in ~2012 when Google Glass came out. One of my classmates got hold of a pair when they were still quite uncommon and wore them to an extracurricular club meeting. Within minutes someone made a comment about him wearing the 'creeper' glasses and asked if he was filming. He never wore them to the club again.

I have been a Mac user since the classic mac days. I waited in line for the first iPhone. macOS/iOS 26 are bad enough that I've begun switching to Linux. I preordered a Clicks Communicator and Pebble Round 2. Switching from a Macbook Pro M4 to an Asus ROG Flow Z13 with Debian.

I'm in BC. The astro-nerd in me would have preferred to see permanent Standard Time instead of a permanent +1 offset. Instinctively, I think morning light is important to our biology for a daily reset and the solar cue of 'high noon' is also a real thing.

Voice is a turn-taking problem. It really feels to me like there's some low hanging fruit with voice that no one is capitalizing on: filler words and pacing. When the LLM notices a silence, it fills it with a contextually aware filler word while the real response generates. Just an 'mhmm' or a 'right, right'. It'd go so far to make the back and forth feel more like a conversation.

IMO STT -> LLM -> TTS is a dead end. The future is end-to-end. I played with this two years ago and even made a demo you can install locally on a gaming GPU, but concluded that making something worth using for real tasks would require training of end-to-end models.

Pretty boneheaded move. Yeah I'll download your app so I can listen to critical weather information on my phone that can't even stay powered on an entire day without charging... Cool, guess I'll just take a wild guess as to how this extreme weather is going to proceed. The whole point of these services is their resilience and the fact you can depend on them.

Serious question: might the solution be a satellite broadcast in the clear, a la DVB-S but for data, audio, or video? Weather radio is a critical service, and even if traditional AM/FM or RF signals are deprecated, there should still be a way for anyone - no matter how remote - to get safety and meteorology information from the government.
