1How uv got so fast ¶
922 points308 commentsHN 46393992by zdw
uv installs Python packages 10x faster than pip, but Rust is only part of the story. The real wins came from PEP 517/518/621/658 enabling static metadata resolution, dropping .egg files and pip.conf, parallel downloads with global caching, and PubGrub resolver. The key insight: it's fast because of what it doesn't do.

A decade of thankless standards work by packaging nerds finally paid off. uv stood on the shoulders of giants who wrote PEPs nobody read, then got all the credit because 'fast Rust tool' is easier to tweet than 'static metadata resolution via PEP 658.'

The most surprising part of uv's success to me isn't Rust at all, it's how much speed we unlocked just by finally treating Python packaging as a well-specified systems problem instead of a pile of historical accidents.
orliesaurus
It certainly doesn't hurt uv to be written in Rust, but it benefits immensely from a decade of thoughtful standardization efforts in Python that lifted the ecosystem away from needing setup.py on the hot path.
woodruffw
Isn't assigning out what all made things fast presumptive without benchmarks? Yes, I imagine a lot is gained from avoiding setup.py, but claiming percentages without data feels hand-wavy.

Lanmaoa asiatica, a bolete mushroom from Yunnan, China, causes 'Lilliputian hallucinations' where 96% of patients see hundreds of tiny colorful people dancing around. It's more related to porcini than magic mushrooms, contains no known psychoactive compounds, and the active ingredient remains a mystery. Effects can last days to months.

So, about one mushroom species in five is poisonous. Why is the ratio so low, why are there lots of edible ones? Without hard-shelled seeds to spread, why be eaten?
card_zero
The Wikipedia page talks about effects lasting for days, even in animal studies. Some historical records claimed effects lasting months to years, though this sounds like triggered psychosis.

A mushroom that bruises blue, but the visions are unlike traditional tryptamines, and there's no psilocybin found. Could this mean we're on the verge of discovering a new class of psychoactive compounds?

witr (Why Is This Running?) is a Linux CLI tool that traces a process, service, or port back to its origin and explains the causal ancestry chain through systemd, Docker, or PM2. Instead of running ps, pstree, ss, and grep separately, you get a human-readable narrative of why something exists.

Finally, a tool that answers the question every sysadmin asks at 3am during an outage: 'what the hell started this and why won't it die?' The README admits it was partly written by AI, which is either refreshingly honest or a new way to disclaim liability.

The gif that loops in the README should pause on the screen with the output for a few seconds longer - it disappears too quickly to take in all of the output.

This is not meant to replace existing monitoring or observability tools. It's designed for those moments when you SSH into a box and need to quickly understand 'why is this running' without digging through configs.

'witr is successful if users trust it during incidents' followed by 'This project was developed with assistance from AI/LLMs supervised by a human who occasionally knew what he was doing.' This seems contradictory to me.

4AI Police Reports: Year in Review ¶

2025 saw states scrambling to regulate AI-generated police reports. Axon's Draft One tool erases original drafts making audits impossible, and was designed to 'avoid disclosure headaches.' Utah now requires AI disclaimers, California mandates disclosure and bans data sharing, and King County banned AI reports entirely. Officers could theoretically blame AI for contradictions in court.

Nothing says 'trustworthy law enforcement' like letting cops outsource report writing to a hallucinating robot, then designing the system to hide the evidence. Axon literally admitted they wanted to avoid 'disclosure headaches.' That's not a feature, that's obstruction of justice with better marketing.

What worries me is that a lot of people see LLMs as smarter than themselves. The worst-case scenario of Utah's law is that when the AI disclaimer is added, enough jurists begin to associate that with 'likely more correct than not.'
futuraperdita
Whether any text is written with AI is not the main issue. The real issue is that for texts like police reports a human still has to take full responsibility for its contents.
eterevsky
If an officer is caught lying on the stand, as shown by a contradiction between their testimony and their police report, they could point to the contradictory parts and say 'the AI wrote that.' Normally that would be hearsay.

5How Lewis Carroll computed determinants :math:history:algorithms:linear-algebra: ¶

Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) invented 'Dodgson Condensation' for computing matrix determinants by hand. You repeatedly condense a matrix by replacing each element with its 2x2 neighborhood determinant, dividing by interior elements. It's O(n^3), keeps integers as integers, and is inherently parallelizable. Terence Tao has blogged about it.
