Free Law Project built X-ray to detect 'bad redactions' in PDFs - where text is merely covered by a black rectangle but remains selectable. It uses PyMuPDF to find rectangles and letters in the same location, renders them as images, and checks if rectangles are single-colored. They ran it on millions of court documents in CourtListener using S3 batch jobs.

Some PDFs have a /Prev pointer, meaning the previous revision of the file is available inside the PDF itself. If it's in one file, it could be in more.

Font kerning is likely a major leak for redaction. The words around a blacked out area have exact positioning that constrains the text within so only certain letter/space combinations could fit.
