The Nagle algorithm was created back in the day of multi-point networking. Multiple hosts were all tied to the same communications channel, so they would use CSMA to avoid collisions. CSMA is no longer necessary on Ethernet today because all modern connections are point-to-point.

The most interesting part of the NIST outage post is NIST's special Time Over Fiber (TOF) program that provides high-precision time transfer by fiber-optic links. I've never heard of this! Very cool service, presumably for quant/HFT/finance firms.

Only Boulder servers lost sync. To say NIST was off is clickbait hyperbole. NIST has >16 NTP servers on IPv4, of those 5 are in Boulder. Most entities should not be using these top-level servers anyway.

In 2006 we bought a house and our realtor gave us a $2500 Best Buy gift certificate. A brand new 720p DLP projection TV was just under that. But I noticed they were clearing out floor model CRTs for $200. I grabbed a 36-inch Trinitron and still have it - works great.

If you like playing with old hardware, be aware that old CRTs have a gotcha: they hold a charge that can shock you across the room, and they can hold that charge for weeks. Google how to discharge it before poking around inside a CRT.

One big issue with FPGAs is how annoying it is to learn how to use them. I did a course on embedded systems and nobody could truly enjoy it because we spent most of our time downloading huge toolchains, waiting for synthesis and PnR to complete and debugging weird IDE issues.

FPGAs need their 'Arduino moment'. There have been so many projects where I've wanted just a little bit of glue logic - something easy to dash off in VHDL. But the damn things require so much support infrastructure: they're complicated to put on boards, complicated to load bitstreams, complicated to debug.

The issue with software teams using FPGAs is that software developers generally aren't good at doing things in parallel. They struggle with hardware thinking. VHDL and Verilog are used because they're excellent at describing hardware, not because they're great programming languages.
