1Working quickly is more important than it seems ¶

Working fast reduces the psychological 'activation energy' of starting tasks, making you more likely to start new projects. Speed creates positive feedback loops: fast workers get more work, quick responses generate more interaction. The only way to get fast is repetition.

The eternal debate between 'move fast and break things' and 'measure twice cut once' gets another entry. The author's point about perceived cost is real though - if emails feel like they take an hour, you'll never write them.

Author in 2015: If every time you write a blog post it takes you six months, you're probably not going to start one. Author in 2025: This is why it's so useful to work on an article for a long time.

You can either learn to be fast at doing low quality work, or learn to be fast at doing high quality work. The only way to learn the latter is to start by prioritizing quality over speed.
hakunin
Speed is an outcome, not a strategy. Speed for the sake of speed is often extremely slow and wastes months or years.

GitHub planned to charge $0.002/minute for self-hosted runners starting March 2026. After developer backlash, they've 'postponed' the increase and will 'listen to customers'. Self-hosted runners remain free for now.

Selbst gehostete Runner bleiben vorerst kostenlos.

The classic tech company playbook: announce unpopular change, wait for outrage, 'pause' to 'listen', implement anyway in 6 months when everyone forgot. At least they're consistent.

I get the feeling they got the feedback that their runners are not as indispensable as they thought and realized they would lose a significant amount of users.

1. Announce price increase generating bad publicity. 2. Kill bad publicity with blog pretending to listen while 'pausing'. 3. Implement price increase a few months later when it's old news.

Isn't GitHub action just 'take a repo, do something with it, save something'? If actions became paid, wouldn't that generate myriads of show HN posts like 'I recreated GitHub Actions in a weekend'?

This interplay between different worlds reminded me of Enigmash, by Jack Lance.

Jonathan Blow and Casey Muratori are great educators on the 'simplicity' end of the spectrum. Jonathan can be super abrasive and comes with political baggage, but does a good job advocating against unnecessary complexity.

Interested to play this but I think the trailer does it a huge disservice. Just a barrage of voice clips and no real structure. They should replace that trailer ASAP.

4RCE via ND6 Router Advertisements in FreeBSD ¶

FreeBSD's rtsol/rtsold programs don't validate domain search lists in IPv6 router advertisements. Attackers on the same network segment can inject shell commands through resolvconf. CVE-2025-14558. Not remotely exploitable over the internet (router ads aren't routable).

IPv6 continues its proud tradition of being both the future of networking and a security researcher's best friend. The 'same network segment' limitation means your coffee shop FreeBSD box is toast, but your datacenter is probably fine.

Is somebody fuzzing IPv6 autoconfiguration stacks? OpenBSD published an nd6 kernel fix earlier this month for an unrelated issue.

Isn't almost every laptop autoconnecting to known network names like 'Starbucks'? That would mean every FreeBSD laptop in proximity of an attacker is vulnerable.

That's a nasty one, embedded FreeBSD users will have a hard time mitigating this.

5How getting richer made teenagers less free ¶

Economic prosperity eliminated dangerous child labor but overcorrected into helicopter parenting. 36% of Americans think kids shouldn't be left home alone until 14-17. 36% would report a parent to CPS for letting a 10-year-old play alone in a park. We went from 14-year-old breadwinners to 14-year-olds who can't be trusted home alone.

I grew up in the late 80s/early 90s, rural place with poverty and working class people. We'd be outside all day - being inside was a privilege. Decades later, my peers' kids are barely outside. Parents are involved from morning to evening.

It creates permanent adolescents, scared of responsibilities, scared of commitment, scared of exploring. I've seen it countless times with teenagers in my family, they're overgrown babies.
