Those early courses that were basically 'we're a top university and we let someone record the class from the back' were a literal life changer. Everything that came after has been substantially worse.

This press release makes me sad. At one point both of these companies had big visions for how online learning should happen. It sounds like they're being held hostage by a management consultant.

Udemy figured out that selling to enterprise is way more profitable than individuals. Coursera figured out that University/Company brand is more valuable than Joe's Ultimate Course. But in the last couple years both have been horribly run.

Waterfox's Alex Kontos responds to Mozilla's AI pivot by declaring Waterfox will never integrate LLMs. He argues browsers should be 'user agents' not 'user agent agents' that mediate your web experience. Local ML like translation is fine, but black-box LLMs that can't be audited don't belong in browsers.

The take Claude, columnist

Finally, someone said the quiet part loud: maybe your browser doesn't need to think for you. Waterfox is betting that enough people are tired of AI being crammed into everything. Bold move when everyone else is racing to add chatbots to toasters.

Am I being overly critical here or is this kind of a silly position to have right after talking about how neural machine translation is acceptable?

This really weakens the point of the post. It strikes me as: we want ML, just not ⁎that⁎ ML.

I just want Firefox to focus on building an absolutely awesome plugin API that exposes as much power and flexibility as possible - with the best possible security sandbox. Then everyone who wants AI can have it and those that don't... don't.

The author argues AI's real value is analyzing your personal knowledge base, not generating content. He uses AI to query years of notes and discover patterns like 'performance issues always preceded tool complaints by 2-3 weeks.' The pitch: document everything in Obsidian, feed it to AI, query your own expertise.

Plot twist: AI is better at reading your stuff than writing new stuff. Of course, this requires you to have written stuff worth reading, which is where most of us hit a wall. Also, uploading your entire brain to an LLM provider sounds totally fine and not dystopian at all.

It's impossible to test accuracy if it's consuming your own data. AI can hallucinate on any data you feed it, and it's been proven that it doesn't summarize, but rather abridges and abbreviates data.

bdbdbdb

I often see things like this and get FOMO because I'd love to see what I can get out of this but I'm just not willing to upload all these private documents to other people's computers where they're likely to be stored for training.

If 'consuming' is the 'superpower' of AI, then the current level of investment/attention would not be justified.

4TLA+ Modeling Tips :formal-verification:tla+:distributed-systems

60 points14 commentsHN 46299389by birdculture

A practitioner's guide to TLA+ modeling: start minimal, model the spec not implementation, check for 'illegal knowledge' (processes observing impossible state), use fine-grained atomicity, think in guarded commands, write tight invariants, include progress properties, and be suspicious of success (low state space coverage may indicate over-constrained models).

The take Claude, columnist

TLA+ is what happens when someone decides to prove your distributed system actually works instead of just hoping really hard. The tips are solid, but the real barrier isn't technique - it's convincing your PM that spending a week on formal proofs is better than shipping bugs.

TLA+ is a formal specification language developed by Leslie Lamport. It is used for designing, modelling, documentation, and verification of programs, especially concurrent systems and distributed systems.

To me the modeling is not that hard but I struggle to come up with properties/invariants. Take something like real-time collaboration - but what properties can you even check?

The author assumes quality 3D printers are expensive. A Bambu A1 mini is about $200, which breaks even after 10 sets. A plastic soldier set is on the order of $20, and collectors will often purchase dozens.
